Yes... have a problem. But admitting it is the first step on the road to...ah, who am I kidding? You don't want to "recover" from your "problem" - it's a hobby, enjoy it!
But, the next time you are looking at your pedals trying to figure out which ones might need to go, pick out a few Boss pedals and sell them to me! Seriously, though, which older Boss compacts do you have? Anything unique/special/tough to find? Just curious.

No, not really any older Boss pedals. I used to have a Slow Gear but someone offered me $600 for it so I took it since I built myself one that works better (the green pedal with the gator on it on the bottom shelf).
Here's the Boss pedals I have on the shelves: 4th shelf left to right: CS-3, BF-2, PH-2, GE-7. 5th shelf left to right: 3 DS-1 (a Keeley ASE/Ultra, MIJ, and MIT), 3 MT-2, 3 SD-1, 2 BD-2, 2 MD-2, 3 HM-2 (2 MIJ, 1 MIT), 2 MZ-2, DF-2, HR-2, AW-2, 2 NF-1, CE-5, DD-6, and a CH-1. Oh, and there's another MT-2 on the bottom shelf! Edit: To keep this thread on topic my favorite Boss distortions are the MZ-2 and the DF-2 because they're pretty different (for a Boss pedal). Sound-wise I like the HM-2 and the MT-2 I modified.

Boss would be OK but I would have to loop them out of the chain when not on. I like that Carl Martin Octaswitch and the Radials are nice for the bucks. The few Boss I have had I have gone for the various mods. Some of those were pretty good, like the Keeley mods. In the last years I have just gone with more top shelf pedals. Never been a big vintage guy myself, I had a lot of that original gear ages ago and was not all that great as I remember. I follow the modern "sandwich" advice of all the builder gurus who state high end buffer 1st, then all true by pass, with another buffer on the end. I use a Radial PB1 as it is a great high end impedance buffer 1st in chain, and a tube buffer circuit in my Ibanez on the end of the amp in chain. Makes for a real true tone, transparent wood of the guitar and low noise without too much dampening of the signal. Last edited by darkhorse; 12-06-2011 at 06:09 PM. |

I try to follow that buffer, true bypass, buffer setup too as I find it does seem to work best as long as the buffers are decent buffers. I always recommend it to people at least. There is a sick little side of me that wants to clean up the shelves a little with one of each pedal and connect all of them and play through them all. I think the one thing stopping me is supplying power to them all. I don't really use my "vintage" pedals too much. I pull them down and play them for a week or so at a time and put them back.

I have to say for uber gain tones I have fallen in love w highly tuned and tweaked in Line 6 amp models. Just a mind blower once you understand the unit.
Imagine dual tuned stacked ENGLs, Mesa dualRecs, Marshalls, or Boger Uberschalls. Most intense articulate distortion I have ever played and I have played through a few in my day. Made me retire my high gain pedals. |
