Oh believe me I've tried it numerous times. But just a few days ago I sat down and tried both again to refresh my fading memory.
To me (IMHO) I think the difference is night vs day.
The Loop is much more organic, lush, seamless, than going into the amp face.
Here's the kicker ... When plugged into the face, the Delay sounded like I had a new pedal I was tinkering with. But when included in the loop, w/my DD20, CH20, and Eventide TF, it is so fat it's unexplainable.

I'm a big Effects Loop believer. All my "Loop" effects (DD20,CH20,Eventide TF) have "Loop & Amp Face" options. I've tried all combinations, and the Loop is by far the best sounding. (IMHO)

I've bought one Multi effects unit, that was a Roland VG88 w/GK2 PU which I mounted to my '85/'86 Charvel/Jackson Model6.
The Clean stuff was "to Die for" !!!!!
The Overdrive sound was like a lawn mower.
Oh well, live and learn. I still use it to bring guitar into my Sonar, but that's my only option since I can't mic an amp. (to loud for home).
Using the GK2 PU gets 12 string effects, great clean delay, Harmony, it's quite impressive. But the OD is not there.
I'm very happy with pedals, adding and subtracting in a Band environment. Works for me !!

Amen to the amp loop deal !!!

I loved my older Roland Guitar synth, would like to have the new one. Have to amp up my system to run it properly. I used to use 2 Carvin twins in through the effect loop on it. Been wanting a 2nd amp for the cool panning and depth movement on my stereo pedals. Synth was cool, like most units I worked so many hours on patches and had most of them sounding pretty damn awesome.
Loved the string patches and human choir under my main half stack tone.
